What is aluminum wiring?

From the late 1960s through the mid-1970s, copper prices spiked and many North American homes were wired with solid aluminum branch circuits instead. Aluminum is a fine conductor, but it expands and contracts more than copper with heat — and the wire-to-device connection (outlets, switches, light fixtures) can loosen over decades, creating heat and fire risk.

Silver/grey wire visible at the panel (instead of orange copper)
Stamped "AL" or "ALUM" on the cable jacket
Most common in homes built 1965–1977
